Do I need to file company tax?

Short answer: often yes. What you file — and when — depends on whether your company traded, made a profit, or is dormant.

Many directors ask this when their company:

  • made no money
  • had very few transactions
  • is dormant

The short answer: often yes, but what you file depends on your situation.

If your company traded

You normally need to prepare statutory accounts and a company tax return (CT600).

If your company made no profit

You may still need to file — profit and “filing required” are not the same thing. Read: How to file company tax in the UK.

If your company is dormant

Dormant companies have different expectations. Read: Dormant company tax return (UK) and file dormant accounts with Companies House.

Not sure what HMRC calls the tax return?

HMRC commonly refers to it as a CT600. Read: What is a CT600?
